** Hello there, ------------------------------------------------------------ Welcome to CHRISSYTOPIA TIMES!! While recording with Detroit producer and performer, Nadir Omawale, for my friend Paul Miles, I had seen this quote on the wall from Calvin Coolidge. That persistence, more than talent, genius, and education, is what get things done. The recording process of my first solo EP has been the work of everything I have done in my past come together and packaged into 6 (maybe 7) tracks. Songs that I've written decades ago, but still hold so much meaning, have come to life. I will always wonder if I could have done this while I was in my 20's, but I'm not sure I would have created as polished of a product. And I certainly know that waiting to work with Susie Woodman (my musical partner in rhyme) was worth that time. I just feel so fortunate with the process. Even though it has been time consuming, ego molding, and a lot of universe accepting, I believe in the work. I believe in the stories and I know whenever an audience hears my songs, that they are inspired. While I don't have a date in mind yet for the release, I've been spending these past couple of months busting my bum to create a buzz for something magical right around the corner. Yes, bringing my songs out to the public is such a joyous reward for myself, but don't think for a moment that I'm not grateful for all of the opportunities that have helped me along the way. Giving back is so important to me. And so I share with you two karma inducing events (with more to come) that combine live music and fundraising. The first being tomorrow, Julie's Motor City Songbird's Festival, Friday, at The W.A.B. in Ferndale off of Woodward. I'm so fortunate to have been invited to perform at each one of the 7 festivals with some of the most driven women in the Detroit music scene. This event is so special to me. I have watched my musical career grow from each year and that growth was nurtured because of the belief in one very wonderful supporter of local music, Julie Sias. She's the one who had invited me to join a fantastic lineup with my peers before I believed I belonged there. Her festival has always supported local non-profits. This year donations accepted at the door go to WDET 101.9FM public radio (another supporter of local female musicians) and Ferncare (a free clinic for those who are medically uninsured). Over the summer at my Kaftan & Kimono Party the community helped to raise over $250 in one night for Alternatives For Girls. Wanting to continue that idea, I've decided to keep using music as a way to give back. Music & Comedy come together to support ... is my next undertaking. Cadieux Cafe has offered a stage for me to perform on and I have the voice to continue to help raise funding for non-profits that I believe in. (Thanks Julie for the inspiration.) Being a recent breast cancer survivor, it only made sense during the month of October, that Music and Comedy would come together to support Gilda's Club Metro Detroit. I'll be performing original tunes alongside, comedian Heather Kyles, and latin jazz duo, Ure ña Duo and we'll be accepting donations at the door as well as online through Facebook. Helping others through music gives purpose to what I do. I hope you find a hobby, career, or future dream that does the same for you...and STAY AT IT. Persistence and determination alone are omnipotent.
