Hello there, ------------------------------------------------------------ Welcome to CHRISSYTOPIA TIMES!! Well time sure doesn't stop for anybody and it sure didn't stop for me. It has been a bit since I've updated you all on the goings of Chrissytopia. It's actually been since October of last year if you can believe. So, uhh let me fill ya in on some of the highlights that took precedence to sending out a mailing list... October - recorded backing tracks for my solo EP, booked first solo performance at Willis Show Bar, celebrated a year since my last chemo, grew my vocal lesson business November - Joe Jaber & The Last Divide CD release party at Music Town, local TV performance, opened up for The Crash Test Dummies at The Crofoot, gave thanks December - taught Girl Scout troop #76533 how to sing, booked a wedding gig, performed for Detroit's Noel Night for the third time, hosted annual Chris & Chris Christmas Party, in laws came to visit January - girls weekend in Stratford, surgery to prevent ovarian cancer, recovery February - performed at Detroit's WinterBlast, guest vocalist with The Algebra Mothers to promote their 45 released on Third Man Records, recorded "Live from Third Monk" on Soundcloud March - went to Mexico ( the blue wall in the picture above is from "Casa Azul" where Frida Kahlo lived most of her life).. joined a local band in Tulum and here we are in April and I'm still booking gigs, recording, teaching lessons and I'm nominated for a Detroit Music Award for the 6th time. What a whirlwind of a life, huh?? And it just keeps getting better... So let's chat about how the past has lead me to today... Way back.. I mean way back..when my husband and I had bought our first house (16 years?!?). I was just planting my Detroit vocal roots. I had joined the band Bricktown Station as lead vocalist and started playing to the late night bar crowd, but knew that I had more to offer. Back then I was waiting tables at Max & Erma's in Birmingham during the day and shift managing the Majestic Cafe at night, and right around that time, I met, blues man, Paul Miles. He had asked me to join him on some backing tracks and in a sense, history was made. He had introduced me to so many Detroit musicians. I was just blown away. I remember him inviting me to The Detroit Music Awards because I had sang backing vocals for The John Reece Project and we were up for a Detroit Music Award for our recording "Caribbean Solitude". That was my first taste, and it was yummy!! I got to rub elbows with the coolest musicians on the main floor, walked the red carpet and got to chat with the studio, touring, recording, and performing talent that surrounds this city. That evening I had met Kate Hart's Detroit Women who just about took over the awards show with their wins, and though I was new to the industry, I felt like one their own. So why bring up the past? Well who could've thought that Kate Hart (pictured right of me) would end up being my vocal coach ( She also worked with Joe Jaber?!?). Who would've known that I would be singing alongside Rhonda Bantsimba (pictured left of me) for 13 year old Sofi K. at The Royal Oak Music Theatre. And who would've imagined that the piano player for Detroit Women, Susie Woodman (not pictured, though we probably hung out that night), would one day help me write my first solo EP. It gets weirder folks..while working at Max & Erma's, in my down time I would write songs. I was inspired to write one about my co-worker, Christine. I thought it would be fun if a Christina wrote a song about a Christine. Well Christine is the track that Susie and I entered into this year's NPR Tiny Desk Contest ( video below). I don't know what was in the water back then but things really started to set in motion. I bring this all up partly because I'm nominated in a couple of categories for this year's Detroit Music Awards (registered voters have until April 7th). I'm also fillin you in because I want to inspire YOU!!! What seeds are you planting today for tomorrow? Tell me. I would love to hear about it.
